FOREST STEWARDSHIP |
 |
|

Only a century ago, old-growth forest on Vashon Island, like much of the Northwest, were full of towering firs, hemlocks, and red cedars. Under their sheltering canopy the forest soil was nourished by fallen needles and decaying logs. alder, sala, huckleberries, and thimbleberries grew in sunny clearing where old trees fell. Flowers bloomed in dappled shade. This living partchwork was home to a diverse mix of native amphibians, birds, insects, and mammals. By the 1920s, most of Vashon's forest had been clearcut, and since then some areas have been cut repeatedly. Today, about 15,000 acres, or 60% of the island, have returned to forest. While some of those areas are relatively healthy, many more are stressed by overcrowding, damaged soil, and invasive species.
Why Not leave Our Forests Alone?
Wilderness can take care of itself. But forests damaged by human disturbance often need help to fully recover. Ecological thinning and removal of invasive plants encourage a greater variety of shrubs, understory plants and structures such as clearings, snags and fallen logs. This in turn provides habitat for a greater diversity of creatures, and results in a healthier forest community.
VFS can help! We prepare - or assist owners in preparing - forest stewardship plans that set forth the landowner’s objectives for their forest, establish a baseline documentation of their forest resources (including inventorying and mapping), and propose appropriate management practices. Some owners wish to improve widlife habitat, some want to improve forest health and some want to improve the aesthetics of their woods. Others want to realize some income by thinning overcrowded stands.
Stewardship plans qualify owners to enroll their properties in various King County Resource Management Programs that reduce property taxes in exchange for a committment by landowners to retain all or part of their land in forest cover.
Using low-impact forestry practices that minimize disturbances to the surrounding forest, we help landowners implement their forest plans, including wildlife habitat improvements, tree removal and pruning, invasive species removal and restoration of native trees and plants.
Starting with the thinning of Agren Park in 2004, we have managed thinnning operations for 37 landowners, involving 233 acres, an average of 6.3 acres per landowner. 233 acres is roughly 2% of the forested area on the island.
More than a thousand acres of private land on the island has already been enrolled in county forest management programs that now need managing. VFS also provides monitoring and maintenance follow up care.
