Education
Three fifths of Vashon/Maury Island, or approximately 15,000 acres, is covered by forests. Our Island's health - retaining top soil, absorbing ground water, providing habitat for native creatures - is directly related to the health of our forests.

Private landowners own most of that forestland. As part of our mission, VFS strives to educate these owners about forests: including forest stewardship planning and management, forest ecology and sustainable, low-impact, environmentally sensitive forestry techniques.

Our Education Program includes our Consultant Services, our website and public events booth, presentations to local and regional organizations and govenment entities, marketing materials and articles published in local island papers, in-the-field demonstrations and workshops.

Forest Education Grants

As a non-profit organization, Vashon Forest Stewards has received educational grants from governments and private foundations. The "Wood is Good" grant from the Weyerhaeuser Family Foundation helped educate the public about the advantages of sustainably harvested locally grown and processed lumber. Another grant from the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks has allowed VFS to create a Vashon Youth Corps that employs high school students to plant trees, remove invasive weeds and build trails in public and private forests. These students are also being trained to inventory and monitor forests and are currently working on a forest stewardship plan for the Vashon Island School District's forest.
