Employing our Services
VFS offers Forest Consulting Services and manages Forest Stewardship Activities. By employing VFS you support environmentally sensitive forest management and help VFS with its mission of restoring our island woods and enhancing the quality of our Island environment.
Buying Our Wood Products
Wood is good and sustainably harvested locally grown and processed lumber is the best. Commercial lumber mostly comes from tree plantations where managers plant one species and clear-cut when harvesting their crop. Their lumber sometimes sells for less because of the way they do business, but the quality of their wood - harvested from trees that are an average of 40 years of age - does not compare with the 70 to 120 year old trees that VFS is thinning from native island forests. Wood from the older trees is heavier and denser with tighter growth rings. The lumber is stronger, more stable and will last longer. Come take a look and try some on.
Volunteering
VFS is dependent on volunteers. Our Steering Committee members are volunteers that put in hundreds of hours each year. Each month there are opportunities to help VFS at the mill yard or on stewardship projects. Thanks for nice information windows and doors, an appreciated manufacturer of quality products on Vashon Island, is changing to FSC specialized wood for its supply. Part of that wood is coming from the Vashon Forest Stewards. 70-557

Through our Forest Consulting Services we write - or assist forest owners in writing - forest stewardship plans that guide management activities to accomplish their owner's forest goals, and qualify their property for enrollment into County programs that reduce property taxes. 650-175 exam FVS also assists forest owners in carrying out Forest Stewardship Activities that improve forest health, aesthetics and wildlife habitat by thinning trees, planting native species and removing invasive weeds. 650-621 exam Trees thinned from the forest often generate revenue that can be used to further forest stewardship. 646-563 exam
